What Vein Conditions Do We Treat?

Vein problems like chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can take a toll on your health and appearance. When the valves in your leg veins become damaged, blood begins to pool and cause the formation of unsightly varicose veins and spider veins. You may notice new, swollen, cord-like veins under your skin, or red or purple spider-like veins.

These unwanted veins can also come about from excess weight, sitting or standing for too long throughout your day, and even wearing restrictive clothing. No matter the cause, they can affect your overall health, well-being, and self-confidence.

Damaged veins can also cause fluid to build up in your feet, ankles, and legs.

If you’ve noticed any new leg swelling, pain while standing, or changes in your skin, it’s time to give us a call.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Venous insufficiency: Vein disease caused by damage to the valves in your leg veins, causing blood to flow backward and pool. Over time, the increased pressure on your veins creates more damage, swelling, skin discoloration, ulcers (open sores), and other health complications. By treating or removing faulty veins, we can help resolve these symptoms and improve your health.

  • Varicose veins: Varicose veins are dark purple or blue twisted, bulging veins that lie just beneath your skin’s surface. These veins may develop as the result of CVI, genetics, pregnancy or other hormonal changes, or excess weight. In more severe cases, you may have a hard time standing and walking due to leg cramping, pain, and heaviness.

  • Spider veins: Spider veins are red or purple dilated blood vessels that appear just under your skin’s surface. While they are usually just cosmetic and do not cause any symptoms, they may be a sign that you are developing CVI or another serious vein health issue. Spider veins can be caused by genetics, too much sun exposure, or pregnancy.

  • Leg heaviness: If you have noticed your legs feeling heavier or more tired than usual, you may have CVI, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or another vein health issue. As blood pools in your legs and feet, they can become heavy and tight-feeling. If rest and elevation do not seem to help, it’s time to give us a call.

  • Leg cramps: Are your leg muscles more crampy and sore than usual? Have you been waking up in the middle of the night with painful cramps that last for several minutes? You may have an electrolyte imbalance, or it may be a sign of deeper varicose veins. If your cramps are accompanied by leg heaviness or swelling, you may have a vein health issue.

  • Leg swelling: Puffy, swollen feet, ankles, and legs can be caused by many different things. Pregnancy, CVI, varicose and spider veins, and other underlying health conditions can all interfere with your body’s fluid balance. If your swelling is caused by a vein health issue, our vascular specialists are here to help.

Is Vein Treatment Right for Me?

Your veins are vital to your health, as they are responsible for carrying blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout your body. When the veins in your legs become damaged, they have problems carrying blood back to your heart. You may have started to notice more frequent leg pain, cramping, or swelling. If you leave these untreated, you may eventually develop complications that become harder to treat as time goes on.

Vein Treatments in Staten Island

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, our vein doctors are board-certified specialists trained in cutting-edge techniques to help treat spider veins, varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and more. All of our treatments are minimally invasive, meaning they do not require large, open incisions.

Instead, our specialists make tiny punctures and use long, thin instruments to treat or remove problem veins. These procedures typically take less than 30 minutes to complete and you will be up and walking immediately afterward. Downtime is minimal and recovery takes only a few days, getting you back to what you love as soon as possible.

At our state-of-the-art vein clinic located in Staten Island, NY, we specialize in several techniques, each used to address your individual vein health needs. Your vein specialist will select which treatment is best suited to your needs and appearance goals.

VenaSeal™

VenaSeal™ was approved by the FDA in 2015 as a treatment for sealing off varicose veins using a specially formulated medical-grade adhesive. It is currently the only available varicose vein treatment that does not irritate the vein using chemicals, lasers, or heat. Because of its gentle nature, many people who receive VenaSeal treatment experience far fewer symptoms than with other therapies.

Foam Sclerotherapy

If you’re looking to clear away the appearance of unsightly spider veins, foam sclerotherapy is the perfect treatment for you. This technique uses a small needle to inject a chemical foam containing a sclerosant or sclerosing agent that irritates spider veins, causing them to swell and eventually collapse. By cutting off the blood supply, your body absorbs the problem veins and redirects blood flow to healthy veins instead. Studies show this treatment can be successful in nearly all cases when performed properly. Our vein specialists have years of experience helping patients reach their treatment and aesthetic goals.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Heat is a powerful tool used by vein specialists to close off problem veins, blocking blood flow to them. Our vein specialists use ClosureFAST, a well-studied treatment for varicose veins for large and deep leg veins. This technique uses radio waves or heat energy to seal veins shut. Studies show that the results from ClosureFAST are long-lasting, with many reporting symptom relief five years after treatment.

VarithenaTM

Varithena™ is a form of foam sclerotherapy that uses a specialized chemical formulation known as polidocanol endovenous microfoam (PEM). It is an FDA-approved treatment that has been used for over a decade in treating varicose and spider veins. Varithena foam is administered at a higher concentration than traditional foam sclerotherapy techniques, triggering your body’s blood-clotting response. By blocking blood flow to the vein, it collapses and is absorbed into your body.

ClariVein®

ClariVein® combines the power of mechanical destruction and sclerotherapy to destroy problem spider veins and small varicose veins causing swelling, leg heaviness, and pain. In this minimally invasive technique, a long, extremely thin catheter with a rotating tip is inserted into the vein. The tip spins, rapidly creating scar tissue inside the vein while also releasing a sclerosing agent. ClariVein is FDA-approved and is proven to successfully treat varicose and spider vein symptoms.

Phlebectomy

In some cases, our vein specialists may suggest removing a problem vein rather than trying to close it off. A phlebectomy or microphlebectomy is a procedure that creates a tiny puncture in the skin and uses a hook to remove the vein. This procedure is preferred for treating larger varicose veins that cannot be addressed with sclerotherapy, VenaSeal™, or other available treatments. A phlebectomy can also be used to remove smaller veins that have branched off of larger veins previously treated with RFA or sclerotherapy.
