Reasons You May Need Vein Treatment

Have you noticed any new, swollen veins that stick out underneath your skin? Do you have spider web-like red or purple veins on your thighs? These may be signs of an underlying vein health problem. While they may seem like they are only cosmetic issues, varicose veins and spider veins point to vein damage.

Your leg veins are constantly working against gravity to carry blood from the lower half of your body back toward your heart. Walking pumps your calf muscles, which squeeze the veins to help send blood upward. Your veins also have valves inside them that make sure blood flows in the correct direction.

Your vein valves are susceptible to damage, which can interfere with blood flow in your legs. A condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) develops after valve damage, causing blood to pool in your feet and legs. The extra fluid puts pressure on your veins, causing them to swell and bulge. You may also experience other uncomfortable symptoms that interfere with your day-to-day life.

We recommend vein treatment to help alleviate your symptoms and/or clear away unsightly varicose and spider veins. Conditions that we help treat include:

  • Venous insufficiency: Venous insufficiency is a vein disease caused by damaged valves. CVI not only affects your veins, but it can also affect your skin. Other signs of CVI include brown or red skin, extremely dry skin, and ulcers or open sores. By addressing your vein health issues, you can help clear your skin and reduce the risk of other health complications.
  • Varicose veins: Varicose veins are blue or purple, twisted, bulging veins found on the calves and/or thighs. You are more likely to develop varicose veins if you are or have been pregnant, carry excess weight, or if you have a family history of them. Extra blood pooled in varicose veins may also lead to leg pain, heaviness, and cramping.
  • Spider veins: Spider veins are small, dilated, or burst blood vessels that lie just beneath your skin’s surface. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not stick out from the skin. While they are usually not associated with any symptoms, spider veins may be a sign that you are developing CVI or another vein health issue.
  • Leg cramps: Nearly everyone has experienced a leg cramp or “Charley horse” at some point in their lives. While occasional cramping is normal, it can be a cause for concern if you are experiencing persistent leg cramps, especially at night. Our vein specialists can help you find the root cause of your cramps.
  • Leg heaviness: Do your legs feel extremely heavy at the end of the day? Does it feel like you are walking around with bricks tied to your feet? Leg heaviness can be caused by CVI, fluid buildup, or peripheral artery disease (PAD). If you would like to get to the bottom of your symptoms, give our East Brunswick clinic a call.
  • Leg swelling: Leg swelling is caused by the buildup of excess fluid in your feet and legs. Several conditions are known to cause swelling, including pregnancy, varicose veins, and kidney disease. If you believe your varicose veins are contributing to your swollen or puffy legs, feet, and ankles, our vein specialists can help.

Vein Treatments in East Brunswick

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, our board-certified vein specialists bring years of experience to our clinics. They have trained in the latest, cutting-edge, minimally invasive techniques. These are straightforward procedures that can typically be completed in less than an hour — just in time for your lunch break! You will be back on your feet in no time.

You have probably heard the term, but you may be wondering, “What does minimally invasive mean?” All of our treatments are performed through tiny punctures or incisions made in the skin rather than making large, open incisions. Our vein specialists then use very thin instruments to reach veins and deliver heat or chemicals to seal them off. The incisions heal very quickly, and you will be up and walking within minutes of your procedure. Recovery time typically takes less than a week, letting you get back to your life as soon as possible.

Our East Brunswick location specializes in several treatment options to address vein health issues. When you visit our state-of-the-art clinic, you will walk away satisfied with your treatment and results.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

When you think about your ideal vein treatment, you likely want one that will provide long-lasting results. Studies show that the results of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment for varicose veins last several years. At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we use the ClosureFAST system, which uses radio waves to create heat. The heat seals off problem veins, cutting off their blood supply. Your body reabsorbs the veins, clearing your skin.

Foam Sclerotherapy

Foam sclerotherapy is a highly successful spider vein treatment. It uses chemical foam solutions containing sclerosing agents or sclerosants that irritate the veins, causing them to collapse. The collapsed veins are eventually reabsorbed by your body, and blood flow is redirected to healthy veins. The skin’s appearance typically improves within a few weeks.

Varithena™

Varithena™ is a specific foam sclerotherapy system that uses polidocanol endovenous microfoam (PEM) to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. PEM is a concentrated foam that triggers your body to make blood clots. The clots form in the affected vein and cut off the blood supply, causing it to collapse. Varithena has been used for over 10 years as a standard treatment in the industry.

ClariVein®

ClariVein® combines two vein treatment techniques to clear away spider veins and small varicose veins. The system uses a long, thin catheter with a rotating tip attached to the end. When the tip is inserted into the problem vein, it spins to create scar tissue along the vein wall. ClariVein also uses foam sclerotherapy to further irritate the vein, eventually causing it to collapse.

Phlebectomy

In some cases, the easiest way to treat a vein problem is to remove the damaged vein entirely. This is known as a phlebectomy or microphlebectomy, and your vein specialist may recommend it if your great saphenous vein (GSV) is affected. You may also have a phlebectomy to remove smaller veins branching off of larger veins that were previously treated with sclerotherapy or RFA. During the procedure, your specialist will create tiny punctures near the vein, then use a phlebectomy hook to remove it.

VenaSeal™

Rather than using heat, chemicals, or lasers, VenaSeal™ uses a medical-grade adhesive to seal off damaged, leaky veins. This is considered one of the more gentle vein treatments, and it tends to have fewer side effects than other options. It was approved by the FDA in 2015, and many people have seen success with it.
