What Is Your Vein Health Problem?

Vein diseases including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, hampering your life. CVI is a disease that occurs slowly over time and is typically caused by lifestyle choices, including standing or sitting too long throughout the day, poor diet, and excess weight. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or a blood clot stuck in a deep vein in your legs, is also a common cause of CVI.

All of these conditions can damage the valves in your leg veins, which are responsible for keeping blood flowing in the correct direction. When they become damaged, blood begins to flow backward and pool in your feet and legs, making it harder to pump back toward your heart.

No matter what has caused your vein disease, the consequences of it can have a negative impact on your health. Varicose veins and spider veins are the most obvious symptom, but you might also notice your legs feel uncomfortable at the end of a long day.

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute, we treat several vein health conditions, including:

  • Venous insufficiency: Damage to your vein valves over time leads to CVI, putting you at risk for spider veins, varicose veins, and other vein health issues. As blood collects in your feet and legs, your veins begin to swell and bulge underneath your skin. The damage can also cause skin changes. The best way to treat CVI is to close off or remove problem veins.

  • Spider veins: If you have noticed spider web-like purple or red veins just underneath your skin, you are not alone. Many people are living with spider veins, and while they typically do not cause symptoms, they may be a sign that you are developing CVI or another vein health issue.

  • Varicose veins: Unlike spider veins, varicose veins are bulging, twisted veins that stick outward from underneath the skin. They mainly affect the larger veins in your leg, and sometimes they can be deep and unnoticeable from the surface. Varicose veins may be the cause of your leg pain, swelling, and heaviness — in more severe cases, they can interfere with your mobility.

  • Leg heaviness: If you are living with CVI, blood pools easily in your legs and feet. This can cause them to feel heavy and weighed down. Other vein diseases, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), can also cause leg heaviness. The treatments for CVI and PAD differ quite a bit, so it may be a good idea to visit our vein specialists to see what may be the cause.

  • Leg cramps: Have leg cramps ever woken you up in the middle of the night, maybe even out of a sound sleep? Leg cramping to this extent is not normal, and it may be caused by an underlying vein health issue. If you have tried adding more electrolytes to your diet, but your cramps have not improved, give our office a call.

  • Leg swelling: Fluid buildup in your legs can cause them to look puffy or swollen. Leg swelling may be a sign of CVI — it can also be caused by pregnancy, kidney issues, or another health condition interfering with your body’s ability to control its fluid balance. If your leg swelling is caused by CVI or varicose veins, we can help.

How Do I Know I Need Vein Treatment?

You may be a candidate for vein treatment if your symptoms are interfering with your daily life, or if you would like to improve the appearance of your legs. Your veins are important to your health and they are responsible for making sure nutrients and oxygen are carried throughout your body. Damaged veins pose a health risk, so it is best to get them checked sooner rather than later.

By booking your complimentary first visit and vein screening at our Edison clinic, we can help you better understand your vein health and your treatment needs. Give us a call if you have noticed:

  • New spider veins, even without experiencing any other symptoms
  • Varicose veins
  • Changes in your skin color or texture
  • New pain, cramping, or heaviness in your legs

Our Vein Treatments in Edison

At Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute in Edison, we specialize in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatments using the latest technologies to treat your vein problems. Whether you want to clear away unsightly spider veins or treat your leg pain or heaviness, we have the tools and staff to help. With our patient-centered approach, we always take your individual needs into consideration first and foremost.

We pride ourselves on offering only the most cutting-edge, minimally invasive techniques for treating varicose veins and spider veins. These methods use tiny punctures and long, thin instruments rather than open incisions used in invasive procedures. The average time to complete a procedure is 30 minutes or less, getting you back on your feet in no time. Recovery and healing time take just a few days.

We offer several treatment options at our Edison clinic to seal and/or remove leaky blood vessels. Your vein specialist will work with you to determine which option is best suited to your cosmetic and vein health goals.

ClariVein®

ClariVein® combines two powerful methods — mechanical destruction and foam sclerotherapy — to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. A long, thin, catheter containing a rotating tip at the end is inserted into your leg vein. When the tip spins, it creates scar tissue inside the vein. At the same time, the system releases a chemical sclerosing agent to irritate the vein further. As a result, the vein collapses in on itself, blocking blood flow. ClariVein is an FDA-approved treatment.

Foam Sclerotherapy

For small spider veins, the preferred treatment is foam sclerotherapy. This method uses a chemical foam made with a sclerosant or sclerosing agent that irritates the veins, causing them to collapse. After the veins collapse, your body redirects blood flow to your healthy veins, clearing your skin’s appearance. Foam sclerotherapy was shown in studies to be a successful treatment method, resolving spider veins nearly 100 percent of the time.

VenaSeal™

Another method for blocking off blood flow through veins is to seal them with a medical-grade adhesive. VenaSeal™ is an FDA-approved method for treating varicose veins that does not use lasers, heat, or other harsh chemicals. It is considered a more gentle treatment that results in fewer side effects.

Varithena™

Varithena™ is a specially formulated foam sclerotherapy that uses polidocanol endovenous microfoam (PEM) in higher concentrations. For over 10 years, it has been a staple in treating spider veins and varicose veins. The PEM formulation triggers your body’s blood-clotting process, which blocks blood flow through the vein, eventually causing it to collapse.

Phlebectomy

Sometimes, the best way to treat varicose veins is not to close them off but to remove them. A phlebectomy or microphlebectomy involves removing problem veins using a small hook inserted through tiny punctures in your skin. This procedure is preferred for varicose veins affecting the great saphenous vein (GSV) and other large veins in your legs. A phlebectomy is also great for removing veins that have started to grow off of other veins treated with radiofrequency ablation or sclerotherapy in the past.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a medical technique that uses radio waves to create heat. ClosureFAST is a system used at Varicose and Spider Veins Treatment Institute that uses heat to seal off problem veins. This treatment is best for large, deep veins in the legs. The results from ClosureFAST can last for several years, meaning you will need fewer treatments over time.

What To Expect at Your First Visit

Our vein doctors are board-certified vascular specialists with decades of experience, ready to develop a treatment plan customized to you.
